The Diners Club Card was the original charge card. In 1950, a businessman named Frank McNamara took a group of guests out to dinner at a New York restaurant, but discovered that he did not have his wallet with him. Fortunately, the owner of the restaurant knew him, and accepted his business card as a promise to pay. McNamara was then inspired to create a method to prove the identity of a card holder as well his ability to pay through this innovative new card. He started the Diners Club Card that same year, and the original membership was 200, with the card being accepted at 27 different restaurants. In 2002, there were 8 million Diners Club Cardholders in more than 200 countries, and the card has now gained acceptance in over 6 million businesses around the world.
